Music Video Inspiration: "Best Interest" by Tyler, The Creator

I wanted to dedicate this blog post about an inspiration for the "Die With A Smile" music video. Back in 2020, I remember first watching the "Best Interest" by Tyler, The Creator music video on YouTube. This was my first time ever hearing the song but besides the song, the most memorable thing I remember was the simplicity of the music video. Stylistically, I can be very minimalistic so this music video stood out to me.
Most artists may have big budget that usually may cover set pieces, choreography, and maybe even special effects. But Tyler's video distanced itself from these conventions. To begin with, his video adapts a 4:3 aspect ratio, having its black bars on the side. Most videos use a 16:9 aspect ratio with black bars above and below the video. This choice makes the video seem very casual and authentic, instead of an elaborate mini film. This makes sense as Tyler seems to be recording the video from some sort of retro handheld camera.
This leads to my next point; the video also looks vibrant and retro, which adds visual appeal to what is seemingly a very simple video. The vibrancy is not too much to where the video looks to saturated, and the old quality of the camera adds to the candidness of the video.
Overall, I really enjoy these aspects and will take inspiration from this video when I edit the music video on CapCut.
